The Transdnestr Republic (to the southwest of Ukraine and actually carved out of eastern Moldava) is very strongly pro-Russian politically. Transdnestr served as a strategically important military base for the Soviet Union’s 14th Army, which left much of its weapons-systems behind – so that the Transdnestr army is extremely well-armed, including large numbers of tanks and artillery. Russia still maintains about 1,200 military personnel there as “peacekeepers” – but there are no ethnic conflicts – only political ones. Transdnestr has held several referenda since 1992 in which the people voted to become part of Russia. The last such referendum was in 2006.
